Falling Into Winter’s Sleep is a 10-part composition and album created for four acclaimed Finnish ensembles with roots in jazz, folk, and contemporary music: Awake Percussion, Luoto luonnos, Saxtronauts & Signe. Composed by violinist & composer Meriheini Luoto together with the performers, the work unfolds as a journey through the northern winter.

The fusion of strings, winds, voice, and percussion evokes a sonic landscape where frost embraces, winds whisper, and ice sheets creak. Listeners are immersed in a three-dimensional soundscape that invites them to pause, breathe, and surrender to the slow rhythm of the season.

Premiered in January 2024 to standing ovations and glowing reviews, the work now finds a new form on record. On the album, the music becomes more intimate, offering shifting perspectives where inner landscapes intertwine with the wintry outdoors.

“The process began in 2022 with winter-themed improvisations — one ensemble at a time, overlapping, interlacing, and influencing each other,” Luoto explains. “I allowed my imagination to merge the instruments’ timbres and the fragments of improvisation. Slowly, a portrait of winter emerged: a journey through the winter season, sometimes pausing to observe the smallest details, sometimes falling almost into sleep.”
